Navigation- is a field of study that focuses on the process of monitoring and controlling the movement of a craft or vehicle from one place or another.  From the 1530's Latin navigationem, to go by sea. Thank you Wikipedia.

A part of completing ASA 105 course is to do chart navigation for a sailing vessel on paper charts and not cheat using the wonderful little GPS, although that is how many get around now, it is still very important to know the basics of using paper charts.

This portion is a little better for me with my experience in mapping although my knowledge is pretty much all terrestrial.  Marine charts are a bit different and doing things such as plotting a running fix is a bit different from what I am use to.
